Dresden – City of High-tech and High Culture

Dresden. Altstadtsilhouette

Since German reunification, the state capital of Saxony has grown into a well-known and dynamic economic and scientific centre. Characteristic for Dresden’s economic structure is the wide range of local industries and the close integration of research and industry. The most important growth and development stimuli are created by three innovative fields of competence: microelectronics/IT and communication technology, nanotechnology/new materials and life sciences/biotechnology.

Dresden has direct motorway links to Prague and Warsaw, which puts it into pole position with regard to the development of the Eastern European markets. Further benefits in this field include an international airport and the Elbe river port.
As a European city of art and culture, Dresden has much to offer for its visitors. Here, more than 800 years of cultural history are linked gracefully with modern developments in architecture, art, music and theatre.
The historic city centre with its unique architectural ensemble of Zwinger Palace, Semper Opera, Royal Palace, Brühlsche Terrasse and Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) is known worldwide.

Both Dresden’s geography and atmosphere are dominated by the river. Around the place where the city lies, the River Elbe shaped a wide valley. All the important buildings of the former residence of the King of Saxony were focused on the river. Today, the environment of the Elbe meadows and the valley’s slopes characterises the excellent quality of life in the city, and the protected river landscape provides ample space for recreation.
